Spiritual Formation

One of the four dimensions of priestly formation at Alokolum.

Spiritual formation is the key to every other dimension of a priestly candidate’s formation, drawing him into deep communion with Jesus Christ the good Shepherd and leading him to surrender his life to the spirit with a filial attitude toward the Father and a trusting attachment to the church.

The aim is a holistic spirituality in which every kind of formation given at the seminary becomes part of the candidate’s own spiritual life.

Through an integral stage-by-stage programme guided by superiors and formators, all aspects of seminary life become part of the candidate’s own spiritual life. Prayer is central; the daily Eucharist is the centre of the whole life of the seminary supported by the liturgy of the hours, the sacrament of reconciliation, spiritual direction, meditation on God’s word, the rosary, recollections, retreats and devotions. All these, help in nurturing a deep personal prayer life so that he becomes an exemplary teacher of prayer and prudent director of souls.

The candidate’s union with Christ is also expressed in obedience, poverty, chastity and celibacy, in a love of interior silence and the mystery of the cross, in undivided dedication to God’s people and in filial devotion to Mary while the faith and witness of our patrons the Uganda Martyrs, remain a lasting inspiration for our seminarians.
